how do i use a wireless router as an access point in my wireless network?

I currently have a wireless network with my internet being verizon DSL. The router I have is a dsl modem/wireless router combined in one.

What I want to do is buy a second wireless router to use as an internet source for my xbox 360. The 360 wireless usb adapter is a rip-off at $100. I want to just use this second router to pick up the signal, and then have it plugged in through ethernet to the xbox 360.

How can I do this - can I use any normal linksys/netgear/dlink wireless router?

You could try to add a wireless access point to your wireless router if you have multiple Ethernet out connections on the back of your current router but you will have to run an Ethernet cable from the router to the access point.

They may conflict with one another. I have my doubts that it will work.

I'm not fully convinced I understand what you are trying to do but I know for sure you cannot use 2 wireless routers for 2 different purposes in the same house with one modem unless you have a Ethernet hub to split the wires leading to each router.

I wired my home with Ethernet connections in every room. I have a hub router that supplies a Ethernet connecton to all these rooms. I could buy access points for each room and do what you are saying but they would each have to be stand alone access points with seperate passwords. That is the only way I think you could do what you are wanting to do.
