Simply put the cd in and instal windows xp. I think you need to insert the cd in, then reboot, and while it's rebooting, you'll get the option "boot from cd'. Choose that. Then work your way through the cd options to install xp, and install it over windows 98. I think you'll be able to keep your files that way... Oh, and you'll also need a security key, in case you don't have it.

I am confused - are you asking a legal question or a technical question.

If you want to use the disc to upgrade a computer besides the one you have already, then you might be running afoul of the license. Chances are it is a User license - which means it belongs to you - not a specific computer. That said, you are only supposed to use it on one computer that you own.

You should be able to pop it in and read the software license before starting the upgrade process - but you might need a lawyer with you to understand it!

If your question is technical then XP was a great enhancement over Windows 98. It is so good, many people refused to upgrade to Vista - which was a smart idea since Vista is a resource hog

That said, if it came with the computer you do have the legal right to use it. If you do go through the upgrade process then you should immediately use the Windows Update program in Internet Explorer under the Tools menu. In the past four years there have been a number of security patches issued!

Just saw the last post - if the other computer is 10 years old now, I doubt it has the processing power to handle XP.
