You can poke around inside while it's on, just watch out for the deadly
spinning case fans. I sliced the tip of my thumb off with a 120mm fan once.

How about instead of those deadly fans, submerge your PC in oil for
cooling?

Cases aren't really necessary for PCs as long as you can keep the parts
cool and not short-circuit anything. Even a metal PC case won't do that
much for shielding anyway.

Now take a look at this case gallery:

Look at bit closer at the age, technology of that system... it would've
been cool enough outside of the oil with NO fan, just a large passive CPU
heatsink.

A good case will have enough fan mounts that none of the fans need be
spinning fast enough to take off a chunk of thumb, especially not a 120mm
fan.

Hmm, so just leave all parts out where they're vulnerable to damage for no
good reason?

A metal PC case does do a LOT for shielding. Where are you getting this
nonsense? Will a system run outside of the case? Sure, but there's no
point to it except for testing purposes.

LOL. Oddly enough I don't see a single system in that case gallery, that
doesn't have a case.

Oh, I don't know. I had a bare system mounted on my wall for a while. It
saved desk-space and was a major talking-point for the non-PC people who
visited. ;-) Overclocked and cool.

It was just my internet gateway machine for my LAN. I've re-configured my
LAN since.

Actually, liquid-submersion cooling is the most effective cooling method
there is right now and has been used for some supercomputers for years. What
do you think about these temps:

CPU temp is 4.4 F
MOBO temp is -4 F
CPU is running at 2 GHz @ 380 MHz FSB
RAM is running @ 380 MHz.

The problem wasn't with a fan mount, the problem was me playing around with
the unmounted fan while it was on. I had my thumb on the side of it and moved
it over the blades accidentally while looking at something else... *SLICE*
*SPLATTER* *HIDEOUS GORE*.

It wasn't really that bad, just a small section of thumb and what I thought
was completely unnecessary bleeding.

Yes, because that would be cool.

No it doesn't. I'm getting this from the NSA. True, they aren't the brightest
bunch, but they're right about this.

Is there a point to putting custom rims on your car, which will only decrease
performance?

That's why it's called a case gallery.

But, how about this, now this is a case:

There is no need for the "most effective cooling" for a PC. The system
must remain cool enough to operate stabily and promote an acceptable
lifespan.

It's very interesting but not remotely practical... a good system should
at least make a veiled attempt at both.

It's one of those rainy-day-i'm-bored-and-refuse-to-be-constructive type
projects... even if the goal is realized, there's no practical benefit
for a "PC"... maybe some extreme environment but not anywhere hospitable
to humans.

LOL, "unnecessary bleeding".

I can understand that, but a decent case doesn't need any 120mm fans
running at high enough RPM to do that much damage. I can shove fingers in
a fan right now and while it might not feel good, it wouldn't break any
skin because they don't have excessive RPM.

Beyond a certain point, the cooling is "good enough" and more is just
excessive, creates noise, dust buildup and fan bearing wear (in addition
to being a slight hazzard to thumbs/etc).

Hmmmm, as a project I can accept that... that cool is in the eye of the
beholder. I suppose there's also a time in a young man's life when the
fastest or coolest or most expensive or (mostest something-or-other) is
very important, or at least seems that way at the time, and maybe really
is very cool, till the next cool thing comes along........

Talking about bare caseless systems is another story though... after
having enough whole or partial systems/parts not in cases, and at some
point it stops being cool and starts becoming "spring cleaning/trash".
There is much to be said for just having all your parts together in as
many working (cased) systems as possible, and having cases strong enough
that you can stack them, and a KVM or two or three.

yes, a metal case does do a lot. It doesn't eliminate EMR, but does
significantly reduce emissions. This is more-or-less common knowledge,
where have you been?

rims on a car <> computer in a case
computer in a case > rims on a car
people seatbelted in a car ~ computer in a case

It's "something", that's for sure... looks interesting on the one hand,
but on the other it looks kinda like a mess I made a couple decades ago
after a night of drinking with a fellow who called himself the "beer god".
