My new 6800 causes an alarm

I bought a new mobo/chip the same time I bought my video card. When I
first assembled them everything went fine for two days.

My nephew was playing Unreal. He complained that everything was
running too fast. I rebooted the machine and when it booted it made an
alarm. I turned the computer off. When I restarted the computer it
would not even POST. I sent the mobo back. Their test show no
problems.

I just got the mobo back. It booted fine but about a minute or two the
mobo just shutdown. I checked my connections and found nothing wrong.
I again turned it on and it alarmed. I shut it down again. I have
pulled the card and put my Gforce 2 in the machine and it has been
working for over an hour.

Is there something else I can do to make my new card work before I send
it back?

My new 6800 causes an alarm

My mobo is an Abit IC7 G. It works fine with my Gforce 2. It caused
an alarm when I put in the 6800GT.
My mobo says it doesn't do a 3.3V AGP card. I am told that that the
6800 is a 1.5V card from some. Others say the card will not work.

If that alarm is coming from the 6800GT that means you are not supplying
enough power to the card through the molex power connector on the video
card. You do have that connected, don't you? Do you have a power supply
that is capable of providing a sufficient current draw on the +12V rail for
your whole system?

Not enough power getting to the card if you have plugged in the molex at
all or time to upgrade your psu.

Can the card alarm? I assumed it was coming from pc speaker but it
could have been the card. I did have power to the video card.

Everything worked fine for two days. When the mobo would not post I
sent it back. They said the mobo was fine. During the time the mobo
was away I replaced the current 420W power supply with a 600W. I
suspected it could have been the power supply but now I don't think
low power was a factor.

Since I pulled out the 6800 out and put my Gforce 2 back in I have had
no more trouble.

If you forget to connect the power connector to the 6800GT an alarm will
sound.

The 6800 series cards draw considerably more current than the GeForce2,
which the AGP slot is unable to provide, which explains why they have the
molex connector for the extra power that is required to run them. The 6800
Ultras have two molex connectors on each card.

Have you put the 6800 back in after you upgraded the power supply? You
haven't indicated that you have tried that.

Yes I did. The card was in the computer for two days with the 420W PS.
It only lasted 2 minutes with the 600W PS. I got a pretty close
estimate of my power consumption from
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply I came up with 385W. This is
with 4 hard drives. I intentionally started up with 2 of them not
connected this time. So the load this time was only 330W.

My mobo manual had a warning that said... that it won't work with a
3.3V card. I have found no specs exactly what the 6800 card runs from.
Asking on Usenet I get a mixed bag of answers. More than not say the
card is compatible with my Abit IC7G mobo and the card is 1.5V
